A shooting at Memorial High School in Madison, Wisconsin, left one student dead, and a 15-year-old girl has been identified as the shooter. The attack occurred around 9:00 AM on Tuesday, when police were called to the school following reports of gunfire in a classroom. The victim, a 16-year-old boy, was found critically injured and later died at the scene.
The suspect, a freshman at the school, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Police have not released a clear motive for the shooting but confirmed that both the suspect and victim were students at the school. No other injuries were reported, but several students were shaken by the traumatic event.
Witnesses described a tense and chaotic scene as law enforcement arrived, with many students being evacuated or sheltering in place. “It was terrifying, we didn’t know if the shooter was still on campus,” said one student who was in a nearby classroom during the attack.
The Madison Police Department, along with the FBI, is investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting. “We are thoroughly investigating all aspects of this tragedy,” said Police Chief Shon Barnes. “Our priority is ensuring that justice is served and providing support to the families affected.”
The Madison School District has canceled classes for the remainder of the week and is offering counseling services to students and staff. School officials are also reviewing security protocols to prevent future incidents.
“This is a devastating day for our community,” said District Superintendent Dr. Jane Belmore. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, and we are committed to supporting everyone impacted by this tragedy.”
The investigation is ongoing, and police are expected to release more details as they continue their work.
