Washington, D.C. – Former President Donald Trump, now reelected to the presidency, has launched a legal bid to dismiss his conviction related to hush money payments made during his 2016 campaign. His legal team argues that the conviction is politically motivated and should be voided in light of his recent election victory.
The case stems from allegations that Trump falsified business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Prosecutors claim the payment was intended to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election by silencing Daniels about an alleged affair, which Trump has denied. The conviction carries potential penalties ranging from fines to up to four years in prison.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg opposes the dismissal but has agreed to postpone sentencing until after Trump’s upcoming presidential term. Initially scheduled for November 26, 2024, the sentencing is now delayed, allowing Trump to focus on his preparations for returning to the White House.
Trump’s legal team emphasized that the election results reflect public support and should influence the court’s decision. In their filing, they stated, “The American people have spoken, and it is unjust to burden a sitting president with politically motivated prosecutions.”
Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the recent election has been hailed by his supporters as a political comeback. In his victory speech, Trump vowed to prioritize the nation’s interests and “restore American greatness.”
